WanderAway Is The Travel Subscription Box That You Have Been Waiting For
With new subscription boxes popping up everyday, it can be hard to tell which ones are worth your money every month. This is why we are so excited to have discovered our latest obsession WanderAway Box, a travel subscription box that was created by a travel blogger! Meet Tyra, founder of WanderAway Box and founder of the popular travel blog, BarrisTourista.
Tell us about the WanderAway Box. How did you come up with it and why did you start it?
WanderAway is a travel subscription box for people who love to travel and discover new cultures. Specifically, our goal is to bring a little slice of different cultures and locations to those who may not be able to travel as much as they would like. In looking around at the market, travel subscription boxes were in short supply. Plus, people are always asking us to bring back gifts from international destinations, so we thought, “Hey, why not create a service that brings people authentic items from around the world?”
As to the why we started the box: It was really born because of our own personal experiences. I absolutely love traveling...It’s in my blood. But there was a point when, due to various life circumstances, I had to cancel some of my plans and take a little break. I really felt a void during that time before resuming my travels more extensively. My co-founder also loves to travel, but was working on her career, and then started a family. Therefore, vacations had to take a back seat. We understand that a lot of people, especially women, have similar life experiences, and also have the same aspirations to explore the globe. So, we wanted to give people a little taste of adventure so that even if they aren’t able to physically leave, they can still experience the world.
Do your trips abroad influence your box?
Yes and no. Traveling and seeing the world has definitely influenced my desire to bring those experiences to people through WanderAway. Do we solely choose countries that the founders have visited? Absolutely not, as we want to give a wide breadth of experiences (not to mention inspire ourselves!). But when I am traveling overseas, I do take care to plan out what local items may be needed for a particular box, even if it is not the immediate next box.
Why do you feel like it is important for people to explore different cultures in the world, specifically people of color?
I think it is important for everyone to get out of their home countries and see the world, if for nothing other than to enhance their worldview and understand that we are really all quite similar, no matter the ethnicity, religion, or culture. As Dr. Maya Angelou stated: “Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.”
I especially think this is important for people of color to experience the world. Historically, with women of color to be specific, there was a sort of hesitation to travel internationally. Recently, though, there has been a burgeoning black and brown travel movement, and travel industries around the world are recognizing it. I truly believe that the skills learned by traveling and experiencing new cultures are invaluable, especially to understanding one’s self. And as a company, we are also seeking to bring black and brown countries to our subscribers of the box.
What can we expect to come from the subscription every other month?
Every even month (April, June, August, October, December), you can expect high quality items that will inspire your wanderlust.! We don’t reveal the exact items in our boxes, but we announce the travel theme or destination for the box at the beginning of the month it ships. What to expect will depend on the theme. For example, our debut box was the “Travel Inspiration” box, which contained a number of items including a beautiful leather bound travel journal, an ethnic spice sampler with recipes, a handmade candle from Jamaica, travel gear, and even Matcha Green Tea Kit Kats from Japan! Next month will be a (secret) destination-based theme, and the box will be packed full of foodie items and recipes, local handcrafted goods, and more.
Where can we find you online?
You can subscribe at WanderAwayBox.com. We currently offer our regular box and the family box, which has enough items for a family of four. We are also on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter at @WanderAwayBox.
