Here Is What's New in Tech at SXSW 2017

Concert time is coming! Concert time is coming!

I don’t know about you, but here in the States the weather has felt like budding spring in the middle of winter (yaaaas!). It’s the perfect weather to begin stretching your bones from your mental winter slumber, and start daydreaming about the loads of activities available to us as the weather warms up:

  • Ice cream and snow cones.
  • Swimming and water balloon fights (or water gun fights… Whatever! Pick your weapon of choice!).
  • BBQs and outdoor concerts!

Now I’m not a big music-listener (don’t hurt me), so it surprised me to learn that one of the bigger music events of the year covered more than just music. They talk about innovations in tech!

Whoa, whoa, wait… What is SXSW?

For anyone who doesn’t know, South by SouthWest (SXSW) is more than a concert extravaganza… it is an event held in Austin Texas that allows creatives to learn about what’s up-and-coming in entertainment, culture, and technology! It’s held (this year) from March 10th, through the 19th, and has a slew of events to participate in (as you can imagine since it’s a nine-day event)!

But instead of me giving a synopsis, let me pull their own words from their site:

"SXSW dedicates itself to helping creative people achieve their goals. Founded in 1987 in Austin, Texas, SXSW is best known for its conference and festivals that celebrate the convergence of the interactive, film, and music industries.

The SXSW Conference provides an opportunity for global professionals at every level to participate, learn, and network. Featuring a variety of tracks that allow attendees to explore what’s next in the worlds of entertainment, culture, and technology, SXSW proves that the most unexpected discoveries happen when diverse topics and people come together.”

A little Tech at SXSW

I searched for all things tech that was coming to this year’s SXSW, and oooooh boy. There’s a LOT!

Even Jonathan Jackson, Blavity’s Co-Founder, will be presenting (along with several other people doing their own thing) “Keep it 100: Master Authentic Cultural Content” during the Internet Stories at Ignite at SXSW!

Some of my favorite tech events I saw that perked my ears were the Coding While Black Panel. Diversity in Tech: Readiness to Recruitment, and Geek Girl Rising: Making Room for Women in Tech. They even have a SXSW Meet Up for first-timers (because with what all goes on, it can get pretty overwhelming!)!

You can view the full list of tech conferences at SXSW here.

What Else is at SXSW

I know, I know… You came to the tech section for tech, but my second to last link is a meet up for first-timers at SXSW! That just screams “but wait, there’s more!”

Featured Sessions, Speakers, Sessions Culinary, Film Festival Screenings, Comedy, SXSW Gaming, Music Festival Screenings, and more (much much muuuuch more… just click through the homepage menu and watch the extended lists pop up)!

Look, here’s a link to the schedule page so you can create an account, and start saving the events and panels you want to go to most! But if you wanna get a better view at how jam-packed

And speaking of Music Festival Showcases… I know I said I wasn’t too into music, but my mouth dropped when I learned that FLYNT FLOSSY OF TURQUOISE JEEP IS PERFORMING! Y’all remember Yung Humma? Lemme Smang It? Fried or Fertilized? No? Well here’s my personal favorite Turquoise Jeep music video creation, Lemme Smang It. Enjoy!

And one more thing before I sign off…While I was looking for visuals to finalize this piece, I saw that they’re going to be setting up a Los Pollos Hermanos from the hit series Breaking Bad in downtown Austin!

Man, oh man…SXSW is something you don’t wanna miss!
