Now Listening To: Jamila Woods-HEAVN
Chi-town is on the map! Jamila Woods is another moving part of the Chicago collective. Jamila (pronounced juh-MEE-lah) is a triple threat: poet, vocalist, and songwriter. Her sound can be categorized as R&B but it feels like epitome of black girl magic.
She sounds like a perfect hair day. She sounds like taking off your bra after work. She sounds like getting through the tough boss fight that had you stuck for weeks. Jamila Woods sounds like heaven so naturally she chose that as the title for her debut project.
The intro “Bubbles” opens the door to a realm of spectacular black girl wonders. “VRY BLK”, “In My Name”, and “Blk Girl Soldier” are the ingredients that prepare you to cast spells to cultivate and harness your magic. “LSD”, “Emerald St.”, and “Breadcrumbs” are the soundtrack to your journey through troublesome enemies and trying obstacles. “Holy” and “Way Up” are the cries of joy once after pushing through everything that stood in your way.
I listen to this album when I need a sudden burst of inspiration. HEAVN is my go to album when I’m feeling stuck or out of sorts. It’s so comforting to hear especially while I’m writing. On those days when I get discouraged, one song can completely change my mood.
HEAVN is such an uplifting body of work. Jamila makes black womanhood feel nothing short of enchanting. Each song is crafted to touch the deepest parts of your being. If you don’t do anything else this week, allow Jamila Woods to take you on an inspirational trip to black girl HEAVN.
Note: You can also hear Jamila on the Brown Girls web series theme song.
