Spread the love

Ready to start a brand new music playlist chock full of goodies and cool new artists to stan?

If you’re a metal head at all, and love some black girl magic, then check out these 5 outstanding front women below, to be sure to start your new year both hype and with a literal scream. Enjoy!

Alexis Brown (Straight Line Stitch)

Alexis is one of the first front-women I listened to back in my baby bat youth, and also one of the most memorable. I remember watching her on YouTube and feeling awed that there was someone in a band—and fronting it no less—that that looked like me and rocked some beautifully colorful hair!

And let’s not forget that VOICE. Alexis alternates between rich, throaty wails and syrupy melodic croons to give you a sound that is completely unique and totally spellbinding. Check out Straight Line’s Stitch’s “Black Veil” below and see if you agree!

Kayla Phillips (Bleed the Pigs)

Kayla Phillips is the living embodiment of Black Girl Magic. Just check out that beautiful puff of hair, and her striking outfits! Popular on both Tumblr and Instagram, Phillips has become a staple in the Nashville metal scene with her experi-metal band Bleed the Pigs.

Her vocals are rich, powerful, and captivating, and the DIY nature of her vids/music is reminiscent of early 1990’s Riot Grrrl sound. This artfully shot “music video” of one of their practice sets is sure to get you hyped and ready to mosh!

Militia Vox (Judas Priestess)

Militia Voxx has an impressive resume: On top of having performed with Cyndi Lauper, Nancy Sinatra, Taylor Dayne, and a plethora of amazing artists, she has also hosted Afropunk, been featured on FUSE and MTV, and been the lead vocalist for Dee Snider (Twisted Sister)’s heavy metal orchestra band “Van Helsing’s Curse”.

JUST to name a few.

And in 2009 along with several friends she formed the band Judas Priestess, the world’s only all girl metal tribute band. And it has been an impressive run—the band has toured worldwide and performed along top names in the metal world. And Militia, the lead singer, is a powerhouse to boot. With a voice that could give Ann Wilson a run for her money, and a sharp wit that is reminiscent of Kathleen Hanna a la Bikini Kill, I’m sure Militia and her band will become a new favorite. Check out their set and get your “devil horns” ready!

Side Note: Judas Priestess totally sounds like the bada**, Afro punk older sister of Judas Priest. Just sayin’ 😉

Skin (Skunk Anansie)

Skin (born as Debora Dyer) is a British musician that has been making waves in the rock and metal world for nearly three decades. As the lead front-woman of the band Skunk Anansie, Dyer was pivotal in the britrockmovement, and gained worldwide attention for her absolute monster of a voice. Not to mention her stunning fashion.

Skin is a mix of Grace Jones and Alice Cooper, and everybody is totally here for it. Following the band’s breakup, she’s released her own music, launched a successful solo career, and is a judge on the Italian version of “The X-Factor”. Personally, I feel Rihanna took a lot of inspiration from Skunk Anansie’s music video “Charlie Big Potato” down below, for her own MV for Disturbia. Not that I’m complaining 😉

Tamar Kali

Tamar Kali is a Brooklyn rock musician that has been jamming since the mid-2000’s. She takes the second half of her name from “Kali,” the Hindu Goddess of war. She certainly exudes this fiery power in her music. Her sound is a blend of rich soul and gritty rock, and it has made quite the impression in music circles worldwide.

She is a particularly favorite staple in the NYC punk rock scene, and has been featured in VIBE, Trader, and Arise Magazines. She’s opened and shared stages with bands like FishboneParamore, and The Dirtbombs, to name a few! Check out her amazing music video “Pearl” down below, and see if you become a new fan!
