“Do you ever listen to anything new that’s on the radio? Like, EVER?” My friend rolled her eyes when I shook my head no.
My idea of good music had almost totally stopped including Billboard Top 100 picks in high school. Not because I hate new things, but mostly because the new things tended to sound too similar to one another. And while I enjoyed the hell out of “Panda,” it was just one in a long line of bops that made no damn sense.
So until recently, my playlist was mostly old school Busta Rhymes, A Tribe Called Quest, and Missy Elliott. The other 30% was split between old rock tunes, assorted R&B, and a couple J-Squad krump anthems. Your girl was NOT in the know…or the now. Hell, the only reason I knew about “24k Magic” was because it was an ex-coworker’s ringtone.
Luckily, one day, I happened to turn on the radio to catch the end of “Caroline,” a tune by my now-favorite rapper, Aminé. I got to look him up and thus, my love of Aminé was born!
If it wasn’t for that song, I don’t think I would’ve been open to checking out any other alternative rappers. I was used to hiphop sounding a certain way, with rappers who more or less looked and acted a certain way. Seeing so many new rappers having fun being silly in their videos is refreshing.
But my boy Aminé isn’t the only one who knows how to have fun in a video. British rappers Lady Leshurr and Nadia Rose have, in my humble opinion, embodied that spirit of fun while delivering bars hotter than the tropics.
I’m serious. You won’t find a more fire lyrical homage to Missy Elliott, Marvel’s Black Panther, and the Black Panther Party than Lady Leshurr’s “Black Panther.”
And if you’re looking for a smooth delivery with a very danceable beat, Nadia Rose’s “Skwod” is good for what ails ya.
All that good music and fashion LEWKS for days, too?! Darn. Tootin’. You can have it all, friends. (Also, you’re welcome.)
